Since 1776, it was known as Izmailovskaya Street (after Izmailovsky Life Guard Regiment quartered nearby), Izmailovsky Avenue and Novoizmailovsky Avenue, St. Ekateringofsky Avenue, Peschanaya Street. The modern name has been in use since 1859. In 1923-91, it was called Ogorodnikova Avenue - after revolutionary I.V. Ogorodnikov (1881-1923). On the right side of Rizhsky Avenue, there is a complex of the former State Papers Dispatch Office (building 3-11) that was founded in 1818 (see Paper Mill of Goznak). Building 16 houses Road Committee of Leningrad Region, building 21 - Elizavetinskaya Clinical Hospital for Children (founded in 1844, wears the name of L. Pasteur since 1917). The Izmailovsky House of Youth Creativity is quartered in former mansions - building 27 (1878, architect A.L. Gun) and building 29 (1905-07, architect B.I. Girshovich). Building 26 accommodates the Institute of Analytic Instrument-Making of the Russian Academy of Sciences, building 40 - Lenprodmash Joint-Stock Company (foundry since 1872), building 58 - Giprobum Institute. Buildings 41 and 43 were constructed for Kalinkinskaya Women's Hospital for Patients of Venereal Diseases founded in 1762 (today, there is Venereal Dispensary and Scientific Research Institute of Antibiotics and Enzymes). In building 76, Decembrist M.S. Lunin lived in the 1810s.
