SADOVAYA STREET, MALAYA, between Italyanskaya Street and Nevsky Prospect (the shortest street of St. Petersburg, its length is 179 metres). It was built in the second half of the 18th century. Since the 1780s, the road was known as Shuvalovsky Lane, after Count I.I. Shuvalov, whose palace used to stand at the corner with Italyanskaya Street (building 1/25; see Palace of I.I. Shuvalov). The road got its present name in the 1830s, as opposed to Bolshaya Sadovaya Street (see Sadovaya Street). In 1887-1918, it bore the name Ekaterininskaya Street (after the monument to Empress Catherine II on present-day Ostrovskogo Square that completes the street view). In 1918-49, it was called Proletkulta Street, after Proletarskaya kultura (Proletarian Culture), a cultural, educational and literary organisation located in building 2 in 1918-19. Building 2/27 was constructed in 1912-14 for the Noble Assembly (architects Vas.A. Kosyakov, Vl.A. Kosyakov, G.A. Kosyakov). From 1936, it housed the Radio Committee, today Radio House and Radio Petersburg. Building 1 housed Department of Justice, and since the 1920s, - Lenoblzdravotdel (Leningrad Region Health Department), and today the Health Committee of St. Petersburg Administration. In early 1881, members of People's Will dug out under the street from the basement of building 8 to make an attempt upon Emperor Alexander II, a bomb had been planted in the centre of the street by 1 March 1881, but the Emperor changed his usual route. Today, there is a staff entrance of the Theatre of Comedy on this site. In 1997-99, the street was reconstructed, cobbled anew and turned into a pedestrian zone (a public garden was laid out, summer cafes and shops were opened). Close to Nevsky Prospect, there is a light and music fountain and the monument to the photographer (2001, architect L.V. Domracheva, sculptor B.A. Petrov), reminiscent of K.K. Bulla photographer's studio, quartered in building 1/54 in the early 20th century.
