Kuybysheva Street

KUYBYSHEVA STREET (until 1918, Bolshaya Dvoryanskaya Street; until 1935, 1st Derevenskoy Bednoty Street), located between Troitskaya Square and Petrogradskaya Embankment, on the Petrogradskaya Side. The street was named after Soviet statesman V.V. Kuybyshev (1888-1935). The road appeared in the early 18th century. Since the early 20th century, it was built up with mansions and apartment houses, including building no. 2/1, the Kschessinska Mansion (today, the Museum Of Russian Political History); building no. 4 (1909-12, architect R.F. Meltzer); building no. 5 (1912-14, architect D.M. Iofan); building no. 21 (1911, architect K.V. Baldi); building no. 22 (1901-02, architect K.K. Schmidt); and building no. 25 (1874, reconstructed in 1913-14, architect A.A. Ol). Past prominent residents of Kuybysheva Street include historian and literary critic P.E. Shchegolev (building no. 10, 1917-1930s), writer N.A. Leykin (building no. 12, 1880-1906), and microbiologist N.F. Gamaleya (building no. 5, 1915-28).
