DEKABRISTOV STREET, called Ofitserskaya Street until 1918, running from Voznesensky Avenue to Pryazhka River Embankment. The street was laid in the 1740s across the Admiralty Board attendants" living-quarters, previously known as the Officers" Settlement (hence the original name). The street was renamed in commemoration of the participants of the Decembrist Movement. The site of houses Nos. 27-29 was occupied by the Lithuanian Castle Prison burnt down in February 1917. The majority of the street"s buildings originate in the 18th-20th centuries, including house No. 13 (1833, architect A.I. Liderits); house No. 19 (1836, the private residence of architect P.P. Jacot); house No. 21, the Yusupov Palace garden pavilion (the mid-18th century); house No. 23, formerly the War Collegium housing the Military School of Law, ousted in 1882 by the Nikolaevsky Cadet Corps, and now accommodating the Military Transportation University of Railway Troops (1806-09, architects L. Rusca, A.E. Shtaubert); house No. 29, a dwelling house for members of the All-Union Bureau for the Designing of Shipyards (1932-34, architects I.A. Meerzon, Z.O. Brod, V.M. Cherkassky); house No. 34, previously the Cultural Centre named after the First Five-Year Plan (1929-30, 1953-57, architect N.A. Miturich), now the Trade Union Recreation Centre of Sales Workers; house No. 36 (late 18th century, rebuilt in 1843); house No. 38, a swimming pool (1950s, architects V.D. Ekse, N.N. Bashnin); and house No. 54, formerly the Estonian Church of St. John the Baptist and a dwelling house (1911, architect M.K. Dubinsky). In the 1920s, tram lines were put into operation at Dekabristov Street. Past residents of Dekabristov Street included Arctic explorer G.Y. Sedov (house No. 12, 1905), composers E.F. Napravnik (house No. 16, 1865-77) and M.A. Balakirev (house No. 17, 1861), stage director V.E. Meyerhold (house No. 32, 1909-14), artist A.N. Benois (house No. 52, 1902-04), poet A.A. Blok (house No. 57, 1912-21, his flat houses his memorial museum at present). The Academy of Physical Education is located on Dekabristov Street at house No. 35.
