SAITOV Vladimir Ivanovich (1849, St. Petersburg -1938, Leningrad), historian of Russian literature, bibliographer, corresponding member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1906). On account of ill health was compelled to abort his studies at the Second Petersburg Gymnasium and was mostly self-educated. In 1883-93 and 1899-28 worked in the Imperial Public Library, where in 1909-28 he headed the Russian Department, which in 1928 was named in his honour), establishing reference publications fund. On Saitov's initiative the Russian Department launched in the 1920s a project for tracking and recording domestic bibliographic information (the bibliography of Russian bibliographies). It was also thanks to Saitov that the library established a training school for bibliographers, aiming at the prompt processing of readers' inquiries. Saitov published with commentaries the collected works of K. N. Batyushkov, V. L. Pushkin, A. I. Turgenev's correspondence etc., supervised the preparation and publication of the Peterburgsky Nekropol journal. The bibliographic card-catalogue of Russian personalities (about 50 thousand cards) compiled by Saitov is reposited in the Russian Literature Institute. He was buried at Smolensky orthodox Cemetery (the tomb has not survived).
