BELOV ALEXANDR ALEXANDROVICH (1951, Leningrad 1978, ibid.), Merited Master Of Sports of the USSR (basketball). In 1967-78 Belov played for Spartak Leningrad. He was an Olympic champion (1972), world champion (1974; recognised as the best centre forward), European champion (1969, 1971), and champion of the World Student Games (1970); Belov also won the Nations' Cup (1974), the Intercontinental Cup (1975), the World Basketball Festival (1973). He won two European Cup Winners' Cup titles with Spartak (1973, 1975), and the USSR championship (1975). His throw 3 seconds before the final whistle at the Olympic Games in Munich (1972) brought first gold medals to Soviet basketball players. He was buried in Severnoe Cemetery. There is a memorial plaque on the house, where Belov lived. (Zverinskaya avenue, 38).
