SPORTS SCHOOLS for Children and Youth, training high-level sportsmen. First opened in Leningrad in the middle of the 1950s. The Specialized Sports Schools for Olympic Reserves were formed in the 1960s for the purpose of training sportsmen of the highest skill, and included Schools of the Highest Sports Skill in track and field and equestrian sports, among others, were established by the City Sports Committee in the 1970s. Such schools trained candidates to be sports professionals competing at a national and international level. Over 130 Sports Schools operated in Leningrad by 1990, and over 110 Sports Schools and four High-Skill Sports Schools functioned in St. Petersburg in 2002. High-Skill Sports Schools of various sports are located at 10 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue, 68 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue (the Complex School), 2g Petrovsky Island, and 19 Karpovka River Embankment.
