CHILDREN'S LIBRARY, central, municipal, named after Alexander Pushkin, subordinated to the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg Administration (33 Bolshaya Morskaya Street), founded in 1921. Its depository (including branches, contained, as of 2002, over 500,000 volumes (including electronic media). The library annually subscribes to over 250 periodicals. The library contains a comprehensive selection of information resources to meet the information needs of readers of all ages. The library has five reading halls; four of them are specialised: for pre-school children, for art literature, rare books, and multimedia. The library also has a Legal Resource Centre for teenagers. The St. Petersburg department of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) and St. Petersburg Centre for Encouragement of Young Readers were established in the library. Annually, the library lends out over 500,000 books, periodicals and multi media. The library moved to its present location in 1976. The library has four branches with comprehensive general collections and collections on special subjects. Branch No. 2, Children’s Library of History and Culture of St. Petersburg, includes the St. Petersburg Studies Department and a specialised collection. The building of the branch (72 Marata Street) is an architectural monument (1907-09, architect P.F. Aleshin; interiors were decorated by artists N.K. Roerich, M.A. Vrubel, P.K. Vaulin).
