KARGER Mikhail Konstantinovich (1903-1976, Leningrad), historian, art historian, archaeologist, Ph.D. (Doctor of History) (1959). Graduated from Leningrad State University in 1927 and stayed on staff of the University, later chaired the Department of the History of Arts in 1949-73. In 1938-50, Karger held a professorship at the Academy of Arts. Since 1929, Karger worked in the State Academy of Material Culture History (Leningrad Department of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; today Institute of Material Culture History), and in 1953-71 – served as department chairman. In 1941-43, Karger was in active military service. Afterwards, studied monuments of Old Russian architecture of Kiev, Novgorod, Polotsk and other towns. Received the Stalin Prize in 1952. Lived at 3 Forth Line of Vasilievsky Island, since the early 1970s - at 61 Chernaya Rechka Embankment. Buried at Old Kazan Cemetery in the town of Pushkin.
