Fedotov G.P. (1886-1951), religious thinker and historian

FEDOTOV Georgy Petrovich (1886-1951), religious thinker, historian, and essayist. He came to St. Petersburg in 1904 to enter the Technological Institute and join the Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party. Expelled from the institute in 1905, he studied history at Berlin University and Jena University in 1906-08. He entered the department of history of Petersburg University in 1908. He lived abroad between 1910 and 1914. Upon his return in 1914, he passed state examinations at the university. He was a contract lecturer at Petrograd University in 1914-19, simultaneously working in the department of arts of the Public Library. He joined A. A. Meyer's Religious and Philosophical Circle and attended Tuesday Meetings at 7 Maly Avenue of Petrogradskaya Side. In 1920-22, he was a professor of history at Saratov University. Back in Petrograd in 1922, he published Abelard in 1924. He left the USSR in 1925, living in Paris from 1926 to 1940 where he was a professor at the Orthodox Theological Institute from 1926 and wrote such books as St. Philip, Mitropolitan of Moscow; Saints of the Old Rus; and Sacred Verses, as well as for magazines such as Put and Versty. He collaborated with F. A. Stepun and I. I. Burnakov to found Novy Grad, a religious and philosophical magazine, in 1931. He moved to the USA in 1941 where he was a professor at Yale University in 1941-43 and Orthodox Theological Academy, New York, in 1943. He contributed to Za Svobodu journal in 1943-47 and published such books as Russian Religious Consciousness and the Treasury of Russian Spirituality in 1943-48.
