Khlopin V.G., (1890-1950), radiochemist

KHLOPIN Vitaly Grigorievich (1890-1950, Leningrad), radiochemist, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1939. He graduated from Hettingen University and Petersburg University in 1911 and 1912, respectively, and was a teacher at the latter until 1924. He worked at the Radiological Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences and the Radium Institute from 1922; promoted to Director in 1939. The institute was named after him in 1950 with a memorial plaque erected there at 23 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue. He was in charge of building the first Russian radium plant in 1918-21. With his works on chemistry and geochemistry of radioelements, Khlopin laid the foundations for the development of national science and industry in Russia. He was awarded Stalin Prizes in 1943, 1946, and 1949. The Academy of Science established the Khlopin Prize, named in his honour. He lived in the House of Professionals at 61 Lesnoy Avenue from 1945 (memorial plaque). Buried in the Necropolis of Artists.
