Fok V.A., (1898-1974), physicist

FOK Vladimir Alexandrovich (1898, St. Petersburg - 1974, Leningrad), specialist in theoretical physics, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). He graduated from the University of Petrograd in 1922 and remained to work at the university, appointed a professor in 1932. The building of the Physics Scientific Research Institute in Petrodvorets (1 Ulyanovskaya Street) bears his memorial plaque. He also taught at the Physics-Technical Institute (1924-36), Leningrad Polytechnical Institute (1930-32) and the State Optical Institute (1928-41). He was evacuated in 1941, and lived in Moscow for the rest of his life. His works focused on quantum mechanics, quantum electrodynamics, quantum field theory, theory of multi-electron systems, statistical physics, theory of relativity, gravics, radiophysics, mathematical physics and philosophic issues of physics. He was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1960. In Leningrad, Fok lived at 33 Twelfth Line of Vasilievsky Island and was buried at Komarovskoe cemetery.
