Ostrogradsky M.V., (1801-1861), mathematician

OSTROGRADSKY Mikhail Vasilevich (1801-1861), mathematician and mechanic, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1828). He graduated from the University of Kharkov in 1820 and settled in St. Petersburg eight years later. Here he held the professorship at officer classes of the Naval Cadet Corps, at the Institute of the Ministry of Transport Communications (1830), Main Pedagogical Institute (1832), Chief Engineering College (1840) and Chief Artillery School (1841). His major works are dedicated to mathematical analysis, mathematical physics and engineering mechanics. Ostrogradsky was one of the founders of St. Petersburg mathematical scientific school. The house, where he lived from 1831 to 1861 (1/2 Lieutenant Shmidt Embankment), bears a memorial plaque.
