Kachalov N.N., (1883-1961), chemist

KACHALOV Nikolay Nikolaevich (1883-1961), chemical process engineer, Associate of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1933), Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1935). Graduated from the St. Petersburg Mining Institute in 1911, took a post the following year at the St. Petersburg Porcelain Works. Later he worked at the Leningrad Flint Glass Factory, a position he combined with working at the Leningrad State Scientific Research Ceramic Institute (1923-30), the Leningrad Technological Institute (1930-61), and the Silicate Chemistry Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (since 1948). He was one of the initiators domestically produced flint glass, and published a number of papers on refractory brick, porcelain, and art glass. In 1947 he was awarded the Stalin Prize. Buried at Literatorskie Mostky. In 1965 Professora Kachalova Street was established (former Deminskaya Street, in the area of the former Glass Town). Kachalov lived at 6 Vosstaniya Street in 1911-61, in the Hall of the Institute of Silicate Chemistry at 2 Makarova Embankment, and in the building of the former Art Glass Factory at 1 Professora Kachalova Street (memorial plaques installed in all three).
