VESELOVSKY Alexander Nikolaevich (1838-1906, St. Petersburg), literature historian, Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1880). Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University (1858). From 1870, lectured at Petersburg University, where he was appointed professor in 1872. In 1875, Veselovsky founded the Neo-Philological Society of Petersburg University, and became chairman of the Department of Russian Language and Literature in 1901. Founded historical poetics. His fundamental work was devoted to the history of literature from the Italian Renaissance, European and Russian Medieval Literature and folklore, and 19th century Russian Literature (Alexander Pushkin, V.A. Zhukovsky). From the 1890s until 1902, he lived at 35 Second Line of Vasilievsky Island, and in 1902-06 at the House of Academics (today 2/1 Leitenanta Schmidta Embankment). Buried at the Novodevichye Cemetery.
