SOCIETY OF NATURALISTS, St. Petersburg, situated at 9/7 Universitetskaya Embankment, founded under the auspices of Petersburg University in 1868 in order to contribute to the development of science and spread of scientific knowledge and to explore the nature of Russia, especially the North including basins of the Baltic Sea, White Sea, and Arctic Ocean. It has been an independent scientific organisation since 1997. The society had three departments originally. They included zoology and physiology, botany, and geology and mineralogy. The society was headed by K. F. Kessler, A. N. Beketov, A. A. Inostrantsev, V. I. Vernadsky, A. A. Ukhtomsky, L. A. Orbeli and Y. I. Polyansky, et al. with A. K. Dondua acting as the president since 1991. The society arranged a number of expeditions including to the White Sea, Aral Sea, Caspian Sea, and Altai and built several biological stations. It was joined by the Neva Commission in 1890, which was established on the initiative of V. V. Dokuchaev for exploring the flora and fauna of St. Petersburg and its outskirts. In 2002, the society had 18 units specialised in various research areas and numbered about 300 members. It has been publishing Proceedings since 1868, divided into six series since 1998. It also published a journal, Vestnik Estestvoznania (The Natural Science Herald) in 1890-94.
