CHURCH OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS, located at 128 Ligovsky Avenue. An architectural monument. Constructed in 1747-49, in the Baroque style (architect I. Y. Schumacher). It replaced the wooden Church of St. Elijah the Prophet, built in Yamskaya Settlement in 1731 (hence the common name of the church - Yamskaya). The five-dome church with three side-altars was embellished with double pilasters along the facade, extended and reconstructed in 1848-52 (architect E. I. Dimmert). The icons were painted by Korotkov; modelling was done by T. Dylev. Next to this church, in 1764-68, the heated Baroque Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin was constructed. In 1842-44, it was extended by architect V. E. Morgan. The church ensemble was completed with a slender Empire style belfry (1805-12, architect A. I. Postnikov). In 1873, the SS. Cyril & Methodius Church was placed in its ground floor. In 1875, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross founded a charitable society that supported a hospice, two orphanages and a Sunday school. From 1909, a children’s group was held here. The Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin was closed down in 1932 and accommodated a boiler-house. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was closed in 1938 and in 1939 its interior was remodelled. In 1991, both churches were returned to the faithful, in the same year divine services were resumed to the SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, and in 1993, they resumed in the Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin. In 2000, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross became Cossacks Cathedral. In 2002, the bronze bust to Emperor Nicholas II was unveiled in front of the church (sculptor S. Alipov).
