SS. ZACHARIAH AND ELIZABETH CHURCH of Cavalry Guard Regiment, located at 22 Zakharyevskaya Street, an architectural monument. The first stone church for the staff of the Court Chancellery was constructed on this place in 1752-53. From 1803, it served as the church of Cavalry Guard Regiment. In 1856-58, it was rebuilt and the bell tower was erected (architect K. K. Ziegler). In 1897-99, the church was again rebuilt (architect L. N. Benois) in the style of the Elizabethan Baroque and after reconstruction could hold 1,500 people. Exterior mosaics were done according to the drawings by P. P. Chistyakov, the two interior mosaics were made to those of M. V. Nesterov. The silver altar was completed by the firm of C. Faberge. The church treasured several precious 18th century icons and regiment banners. In 1922 the church passed on to the Obnovlentsy (Renovationists). In 1935, it was closed down and turned into a gym, and in 1948 it was demolished. Today in its place there stands a building of Military Technical Engineering University. The name of Zakharyevskaya Street originates from the church.
