LIDVAL Fedor Ivanovich (Iogan Friedrich) (1870, St. Petersburg - 1945), architect. Descendant of Swedish emigrants. Lidval graduated from the Academy of Arts (1896), a Fellow of the Academy of Architecture from 1909. A leading master of Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism, designing comfortable apartment houses and public buildings. His first large-scale building, Lidval's House (1899-1904), placed him among the ranks of St. Petersburg's top architects. His examples of the so-called northern modern architecture include residential-houses at 61 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue (1906-1907), 15 and 17 Malaya Posadskaya Street (1903-1910), 19 Malaya Posadskaya Street (1904), 19 Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street, 3 Malaya Konyushennaya Street; 14 Mokhovaya Street; 92 Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island (1904-1905). Among large-scale residential complexes the following are worth mention: House of Tolstoy (1910-1912) and "Nobel's Town" at 20 Lesnoy Avenue (1910-1913). The Neoclassical forms can be seen in the buildings of Azov-Don Commercial Bank on 3-5 Bolshaya Morskaya Street (1908-1913), the Second Loan Society at 34 Sadovaya Street (1907-1909) and in the building of Astoria Hotel (1911-1912), which completed the architectural ensemble of St. Isaac's Square; among the buildings of that kind the interior design of Evropeyskaya Hotel should also be ranked (1908-10). Together with I.A. Fomin, Lidval elaborated the project plans for developing Goloday Island and built residential houses at 19 and 34 Zheleznovodskaya Street to the designs of the "New St. Petersburg" project (1912-14). He lived and worked in Sweden from 1918.
