KOROBOV Ivan Kuzmich (1700 or 1701-1747), architect and engineer, a representative of Petrine Baroque. He studied in Holland and Belgium as a retainer of Peter the Great (1718-1727). After he returned to St. Petersburg, Korobov performed the functions of an architect for the Admiralty Department (1727-1741). He rebuilt the building of the Main Admiralty (1728-1738), his work retained the original planning (1704), but involved the construction of new buildings, as well as the tiered stone tower with gilded spire over the main entrance, which has become a symbol of St. Petersburg. The tower was retained when the whole building was reconstructed by architect A.D. Zakharov. Korobov organised large-scale building works, such as hydraulic structures in Galernaya Harbour, wooden storehouses on Novaya Gollandiya Island, the building of Novoadmiralteysky Canal, Partikulyarnaya Dockyard (10 Fontanka River Embankment, 1735; dismantled), numerous buildings in Kronstadt. Wooden constructions were replaced by stone ones afterwards, which retained Korobov's plans as their base. He is alleged to have built St. Panteleimon’s Church (1735-39). The buildings on 6 Millionnaya Street and 10 Spassky Lane formed a part of the 19th century's bulk of building. After the fire of 1737, Korobov assumed the post of architect at the Committee for St. Petersburg Constructions. He also contributed to the development of the architectural and building code entitled The Duties of the Architectural Office. He lived in Moscow from 1741.
