POCHTAMTSKY BRIDGE (Post Office Bridge), over the Moika River, beside Prachechny Lane. The bridge was built in 1823-24 (engineers V.K. Traitteur, V.A. Khristianovich) as a chain pedestrian bridge to replace a four-span wooden beam bridge that had existed here since the late 18th century. The name refers to the General Post Office. In 1901-02, the lattices of the railing were replaced, and the bridge was supplied with two wooden piers in 1905 after the wreckage of Egipetsky Bridge (engineer B.V. Baldi). In 1956, the original railing was restored, and in 1968 the spheres on the cast-iron obelisks were gilded. In 1981-1983, the bridge was reconstructed as a suspension bridge (engineers B.E. Dvorkin, R.R. Shipov). It was supplied with two temporary metal piers after part of the chain was damaged in the winter of 2002 (engineer Y.B. Devichinsky). The bridge is about 41.9 metres long and 2.1 metres wide.
