ELISEEV FAMILY, merchants, entrepreneurs, public figures. Progenitor Peter Eliseevich Eliseev (1775-1825, St. Petersburg), a peasant from Yaroslavl Province, opened a greengrocery in St. Petersburg in 1813. After he died, his widow Maria Gavrilovna Eliseeva (1777-1841) and his sons Sergey (1800-58), Grigory (1804-92), and Stepan (1806-79) ran his business. The latter two founded the Eliseev Brothers Partnership in 1858. Grigory proved to be the most active businessman. He was a founding member of St. Petersburg Private Commercial Bank, a member of the board in 1864-75 and chairman in 1875-82. He was also a member of the St. Petersburg Exchange Committee and member of the City Duma, elected in 1858-92. Stepan, who lived at 59 Moika River Embankment, was a founding member of St. Petersburg Discount and Loan Bank. Grigory"s son Alexander Grigorievich Eliseev (1839-1918) was a co-owner of the family partnership, member and chairman of the board at St. Petersburg Private Bank and St. Petersburg Discount and Loan Bank. He lived in his own house at 24 Frantsuzskaya Embankment and had houses at 26 Kirochnaya Street, and at 23 and 25 Fourth Line, Vasilievsky Island. His brother Grigory Grigorievich (1858-1942) took control over partnership activities and became its principal owner in 1896-1914 to lead the business to the peak of prosperity, when the family owned a confectionery, five stores, with the most famous store in Nesvky Prospect (see Eliseevsky Store), and two stalls in Apraksin Yard trading in wine, fruit, groceries, confectioneries, and tobacco. G. G. Eliseev was a major shareholder of St. Petersburg Discount and Loan Bank, chairman of Novaya Bavaria Company, and member of boards at a number of enterprises. He was also an assistant to the General Commissar of the International Fair in St. Louis in 1903. He was a member of the City Duma of St. Petersburg in 1898-1914. He had houses at 12, 14, and 16 Birzhevaya Line, with the partnership board in house 14 and wine cellars in house 16, as well as houses at 1 and 4 Birzhevoy Lane, 10 Makarova Embankment, 56 Nevsky Prospect, 17 Admiralteisky Canal Embankment, and 64 and 66 Fontanka Embankment. His son Sergey Grigorievich (1889-1975) was a scholar of Eastern Studies, specialist in Japanese culture and arts, and lecturer at St. Petersburg University from 1912. He lived at 82 Bolshoy Prospect, Petrogradskaya Side, until he emigrated to France after October 1917. The Eliseev family donated significant funds to educational institutions, hospitals, and almshouses. S. P. Eliseev"s son Peter Stepanovich focused on banking activities. He was a member of the boards in Russian Bank of Commerce and Industry and Russian Bank for Foreign Trade.
