PONTONNY, a municipal unit within the Kolpinsky District since 1997, between the Neva River and the Bolshaya Izhorka River along the Petrozavodskoe Highway; also a railway station along the Saint Petersburg - Volkhovstroy Line. As of 2001, the population totaled 9,900 people. Pontonny includes the former villages of Korchmino (where the Korchminsky Brook and the Neva River meet), and Zarechye (on Bolshaya Izhorka River's left bank). Pontonny borders Ust-Izhora on the northwest. Its name derives from the pontonier camps stationed here in the 18th century. From the mid-19th century, clay was mined along the banks of the Bolshaya Izhorka River and Bolshoy Izhorets Brook, which gave rise to brick plants in the area. In 1906, Pontonny developed as a railway settlement; in the 1930s, the Srednenevsky Navy Shipbuilding Plant was founded along with a workers' settlement. In 1938, Pontonny officially became an urban settlement. Present day Pontonny includes water intake works, the Vodokanal Enterprise Aeration Station, and the Ust-Izhora Plywood Manufacturing Plant.
