CHEKUSHI is an area located in the south-western part of Vasilievsky Island. Its name is known from the first part of the 18th century and is related to "chekushi" or "tokmochi", special wooden hammers used for breaking packed flour kept in barns located next to the Bolshaya Neva River and the present-day Maslyany Canal. An industrial zone was formed here in the end of the 18th century. Several spinning-mills and tanneries (hence, the name of Kozhevennaya (Tannery) Line) were opened here, and Kosaya Line was laid to the enterprises from Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island. Later, Baltic Shipbuilding Factory and Cord Factory were constructed here. One tannery is preserved, i.e. the factory named after Radishchev.
