POLYUSTROVO, an area on the right bank of the Neva River, confined with Marshal Blucher Avenue in the north and with Polyustrovsky Avenue and Revolyutsii Freeway in the south, while in the east it is bordered with the railway junction line. The toponym (from Latin "paluster" meaning swampy) has been known since the early 18th century. In 1721-1865, one of the first Russian health resorts based on local chalybeate waters functioned in Polyustrovo. Since the 1790s, an essential part of Polyustrovo was owned by Count A.A. Bezborodko. In the late 19th century, the industrial development of the territory was launched with the construction of numerous small industrial enterprises; many of them located on the site of present-day intersection of Piskarevsky Avenue and Metallistov Avenue. The major thoroughfares network comprised of Polyustrovsky Avenue, Piskarevsky Avenue, Bezborodkinsky Avenue (today Kondratyevsky), Laboratorny Avenue and Zamshina Street had been developed by the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1920s, the reconstruction of the area of present-day Kalinina Square started. There residential blocks and Leningrad’s largest cinema hall, Gigant, were constructed. Since the early 1960s, the east part of Polyustrovo was built up with standard 5-storey brick houses. Since the second half of the 1960s, mainly blocks of flats of bearing-wall construction were erected to the east of Piskarevsky Avenue. It was then many new avenues like Metallistov Avenue, Energetikov Avenue and Marshal Blucher Avenue appeared. In 1967, the park in the memory of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution was laid out. On the territory of Polyustrovo, there is the Karelia Hotel, Polustrovo Hotel, Polyustrovsky Market, Polyustrovo Mineral Water Bottling Plant, Okhtinskoe Bakery and Confectionery Plant, etc.
