PISKAREVKA, an area to the north-east of St. Petersburg, to the north of Marshal Blucher Avenue and to the west of the railway junction line. It remained a neglected ground up to the beginning of the 19th century, when it was bought by merchant Piskarev (hence the name), who started selling building lots. In 1907-14, the hospital named after Peter the Great was constructed on the territory of Piskarevka; in 1913, Piskarevka railway station appeared. During the Siege of 1941-44, over 470,000 residents of Leningrad who died of starvation, air raids and bombardments, and 50,000 military men were buried on Piskarevka vacant grounds. On May 9, 1960, Piskarevskoe Memorial Cemetery was opened. To the north-west of the cemetery, Piskarevsky forest park was laid out in 1962. The majority of present-day buildings date back to the 1960-70s. The name of Piskarevsky Avenue descends from Piskarevka toponym.
