VOLKOVA VILLAGE, an area to the south of Obvodny Canal, between Moscow Line and Vitebsk Line of Oktyabrskaya Railway, on the banks of the Volkovka River. Since the early 16th century, there was a Novgorod settlement. In the early 18th century, it belonged to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. In 1756, an Orthodox Cemetery was founded to the north-east from the village on the left bank of the Volkovka River, and a Lutheran Cemetery was set to the north-east on the right bank (see Volkovskie Cemeteries). In the mid-19th century, a junction railway line was built to the south of Volkova Village. In the 19th - early 20th centuries, an artillery range and a balloons and airships testing area was located to the south of Volkova Village (see Vozdukhoplavatelny Park). In 1948-51, two small residential areas adjoining to an extensive industrial zone were raised (Carburettor, Avtoarmatura and other plants). From Volkova Village, the name of Volkovsky Avenue arose.
