Parks (entry)

Categories / City Topography/Green Areas/Parks

PARKS are monuments of landscape architecture located in various landscape environments. There are parks located on the lower and on the upper terraces of the Gulf of Finland (the parks of Petrodvorets and Lomonosov), in Neva basin lowlands (the parks of central St. Petersburg), on the maraine plain (the parks of Pushkin), on eskerine hills (Shuvalovsky Park, Osinovaya Roshcha). Natural forests still preserving their original species was the basis for a number of parks (Sosnovka, Udelny Park, Shuvalovsky Park etc.). However, taiga vegetation has almost been entirely transformed by landscape fellings, planting of deciduous species, conifers, decorative bushes, establishment of lawns and flower beds in those parks which were designed by landscape architects in the 18th-19th centuries. Many parks established in post-war years are located in regions where arboreal vegetation was practically non-existant (Moskovsky Park of Victory and Primorsky Park of Victory).
