Salnobuyansky Canal

Categories / City Topography/Waterways and Currents/Canals

SALNOBUYANSKY CANAL was dug between the Korabelnaya Embankment of the Bolshaya Neva River and the Pryazhka River in 1804. It separated Matisov Island from Kolomensky Island. In the 19th century, it housed warehouses producing lard (salo, Salnuy Buyan, hence the name), and the canal (255 meters long and about 30 meters wide) was built for their purposes. In 1915, after demolishing of warehouses, the lower section of the Pryazhka River was filled up, and the Salnobuyan Canal became the river's new bed. Eventually, the canal's name stopped being used.
