Ligovsky Canal

Categories / City Topography/Waterways and Currents/Canals

LIGOVSKY CANAL was constructed to supply drinking water to St. Petersburg under the project of Grigory Skornyakov-Pisarev in 1718-21. Originally, it was 23 km long, 2-4 meters bottom-wide and 1-2 meters deep. The Canal was named after the Liga river which belonged to its water collection system at the canal's head. The Ligovsky Canal headed near Gorelovo village at the pond created on the Chernaya River, flew down the Duderhof heights, and run through the southern Petersburg along the routes of present-day Narodny Opolchenia Avenue, Kubinskaya and Tashkentskaya Streets and Ligovsky Avenue. At the crossing of the Ligovsky Canal and present-day Nekrasova Street (formerly, Basseynaya Street), there was a reservoir feeding Summer Garden fountains and Tavrichesky Garden ponds through the pipe system. Today, there is located Prudki Garden. Aqueduct bridges were constructed at the crossings of the Ligovsky Canal with other waterways (e.g., over the Fontanka River next to Panteleymonovsky Bridge, 1725-27). By the end of the 19th century, Ligovsky Canal was left in utter desolation. In 1891-92, its lower part was filled up to the Obvodny Canal. The Canal's section up to Moskovsky Avenue was covered by 1926, and the section up to the crossing with Krasnoputilovsky Street was filled in 1965-69. There was constructed the Canal's deviation to the Krasnenkaya River with a small extension to Kuznetsovskaya Street to feed the ponds of Park Avaiatorov. The 11 km long section of the Canal from Gorelovo village to the Krasnenkaya River and Park Aviatorov has preserved. Today, the Ligovsky Canal is used for draining and water supply.
