OKKERVIL, a river in the north-east of St. Petersburg, a left tributary to the Okhta River, which flows into the latter 1.8 kilometres above the mouth of the Okhta. From the mid-18th century to the first half of the 19th century the river was called the Malaya Okhta. It drains out from the marshes situated to the south of the Koltushi Hills. The river is 18 kilometres long, with the width varying from 1-1.5 metres in the upper reaches to 20-25 metres in the lower reaches. The depth ranges from 0.25 metres to 0.8 metres. The average flow rate near the mouth of the river equals 0.5 m3 per second. The Okkervil flows in a meandering course. The headwaters of the river are called Chernaya Rechka, whereas the name Okkervil originates from the 17th century after the name of Swedish colonel, who possessed a grange on the bank of the river. The water of the Okkervil is heavily polluted. Within the limits of St. Petersburg, the Okkervil flows through Pravy Bereg Nevy District. Being the north-eastern border of the area of Malaya Okhta, it crosses Zanevsky Avenue, Zolnaya Street, Rossiisky Avenue, Kollontay Street, Podvoyskogo Street and Dybenko Street; altogether, nine bridges cross the Okkervil River. The banks of the river are developed in the area around the Ice Palace only, where an embankment was built. The area of the intersection of the river with Zanevsky Avenue was occupied by a large village of Yablonovka until the 1960s. The complex of the so-called Utkina Summer Residence (2 and 2A Utkin Avenue; the 1790s) was preserved on the site where the Okkervil flows into the Okhta.
