COLLEGE BUILDINGS, group of college buildings including classes, workshops, library, assembly hall, recreation rooms, dormitories, etc. Among the first college buildings were the buildings of the Cadet Corps, Academy of Arts, Foster House, Deaf and Dumb School, Women"s College for the Petty Bourgeois, Smolny Institute, and Ekaterininsky Institute. In the second half of the 19th century college buildings were designed by architect M. A. Makarov who built the Commercial School at 9 Lomonosova Street in 1869-71 and Tsesarevich Nicholas Trade School at the present-day First Krasnoarmeyskaya Street in 1872-74 and architect P. Y. Suzor who rebuilt the Law College at 6 Fontanka River Embankment in 1895. A major contribution to the construction of schools was made by architect L. P. Shishko who built the Second Gymnasium at 27 Kazanskaya Street in 1909-13, the Third Gymnasium at 12 Solyanoy Lane in 1912-13, and the first school swimming-pool in Russia and a gym room for the First Gymnasium at the present-day 11 Pravdy Street in 1914-16. First-class equipment was combined with expressive art nouveau architecture in the buildings of May"s Gymnasium built by architect G. D. Grimm at 39 Fourteenth Line of Vasilievsky Island in 1909-10 and Tenishev School built by architect R. A. Berzen at 35 Mokhovaya Street in 1899-1900. Peter the Great"s Baroque was used in Peter the Great City College House built by architect A. I. Dmitriev at 2 Petrogradskaya Embankment in 1909-11 and the School of Folk Art built by architects N. E. Lansere and I. F. Bezpalov at the present-day 2 Griboedova Canal in 1914-15. Among the first Soviet schools were the School of the Tenth Anniversary of the October Revolution built by architect A. S. Nikolsky at 5 Stachek Avenue in 1925-27 and a school built by architect G. A. Simonov at 9 Tkachey Street in 1927-29. School construction was standardised in 1930s for building schools in various districts of Leningrad such as a school constructed by architects V. F. Belov and A. A. Leyman at 23 Mayakovskogo Street in 1939-40. Among nonstandard schools of the postwar period was a school built by architects S. I. Evdokimov, G. M. Vlanin, et al. at 6 Krasnykh Zor Boulevard in 1968. Housing plans provided for standard school complexes to be built in residential areas of Leningrad. Prefabricated construction became popular in the 1980s, a standard design developed by the 17th Workshop of Lenproject Institute with architect M. A. Sadovsky at the head. Technical secondary schools were another characteristic of 1980s such as the Technical Vocational School of Skorokhod Company built by architect V. M. Freifeld, engineer A. B. Kudryashov, et al. in Zvezdnaya Street in 1983.
