CITY MUSEUM, founded in 1918 based on an earlier museum established in 1908 and situated at 55 Sadovaya Street. The City Museum was accommodated in the Anichkov Palace with the Museum of Old Petersburg as its branch located at 35 Fontanka River Embankment and Countess N. F. Karlova's mansion at 46 Fontanka River Embankment, which was passed over to the museum in 1919. L. A. Ilyin was elected the director and V. Y. Kurbatov the deputy director of the museum in December 1918. It was originally designed as a museum of cities in general rather than a museum of Petrograd. The museum had seven departments and museums: a Department of Architecture and Urban Development, Art Department (Art and the City), Technical Department, Museum of Old Petersburg, Museum of Sanitation and Hygiene, Information and Consultation Department, and the Main Library. The Department of Architecture and Urban Development was the largest and included sections for town planning, construction and landscape gardening. The first expositions were opened in 1922 including the Museum of Old Petersburg, historical premises of the Anichkov Palace, and the first 17 halls of the Architecture Department. A Planning Bureau attached to the museum in 1923 developed the first versions of the draft general plan for the development of Leningrad. The museum was closed in 1935, its exhibits stored in the former Baron A. L. Stieglitz's Technical Drawing School in Solyanoy Settlement.
