LEINER'S RESTAURANT. Opened circa 1885 at 18 Nevsky Prospect by entrepreneur F.O. Leiner; after his death, the restaurant went to his widow V. Leiner. In the late 19th century, Leiner's was a sort of an artistic club, where actors from the Alexandrinsky Theatre gathered after performances. On 20 October 1893, P.I. Tchaikovsky visited the restaurant. According to one version of the story, the composer was served a glass of un-boiled water, causing his death from cholera, which raged throughout St. Petersburg at that time. Among Leiner's guests were V.V. Andreev, F.I. Shalyapin, and others. In the early 1900s, Leiner's Restaurant was closed down. Today its building houses Literary Cafe.
