INSTITUTE OF HAEMATOLOGY AND TRANSFUSION SCIENCE, Russian State Research Institute of Haematology and Transfusiology situated at 16 Second Sovetskaya Street. It was founded on the initiative of E. R. Hesse in 1932 as the Practical Institute for Blood Transfusion and renamed the Research Institute for Haematology and Blood Transfusions from 1965 until it received its present-day name in 1993. It is situated in a group of buildings of the former Holy Trinity Community of Nurses constructed by architects E. S. Vorotilov, A. F. Krasovsky, and V. A. Kurzanov in 1874-91. The institute studies issues of leukaemia, anaemia, and other blood diseases, development and application of blood substitutes and specimens, tissue incompatibility in transplantation of organs and tissues, and scientific research into blood banking. The leader in and supervisor of the national blood transfusion service, it supplied blood donations during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 to meet the needs of the city and Leningrad Front. Institute activities are associated with I. G. Andrianova, V. D. Belyakov, L. G. Bogomolova, N. G. Kartashevsky, I. R. Petrov, Z. A. Chaplygina, V. N. Shamov, and A. N. Filatov (memorial plaque).
