NEVSKAYA MANUFAKTURA (50 Oktyabrskaya Embankment), an open joint-stock company, manufacturer of woolen cloth, non-woven fabrics, and industrial cloth. Founded by English merchant J. Thornton in 1841, the factory belonged to Thornton Woolens Partnership from 1866. It specialised in spinning, weaving, and finishing, as well as manufacturing fabric, such as wool, ratteen, cheviot, tweed, etc., as well as blankets, plaids, and shawls. The factory's products were awarded numerous top prizes at All-Russian and international fairs. Nationalised in 1922, the factory was renamed into Krasny Tkach. New buildings were erected in its territory in 1929 to accommodate a new enterprise specialising in manufacturing industrial cloth and named after E. Talmann, the leader of German communists, in 1933. Both factories were united into Talmann Combine of Broadcloth and Industrial Cloth in 1936. A part of its equipment was evacuated to Penza Region in 1941; the combine resumed its work in 1944 and started spinning new kinds of thread in the early 1950s, such as capron, lavsan, viscose, and nitron. Industrial cloth was mainly intended for the paper industry, as well as mechanical engineering, chemical and cement industries, etc., about 40 industry sectors overall. It also manufactured woolen and half-woolen coatings and suitings, blankets, wadding, and insulators. A part of its products was exported. The factory became a joint-stock company in 1992, and was renamed into Nevskaya Manufaktura.
