RUSSIAN PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY SOCIETY (RFKhO) is one of the oldest scientific societies in Russia. The society was established in 1878 through the union of the Russian Chemical Society (established in 1868) and the Russian Physics Society (established in 1872). First the society consisted of two separate departments, the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry. The Department of Teaching Physics and Chemistry was established in 1917, and the Department of Applied Chemistry was established in 1927. Among the Russian Physics and Chemistry Society's active members were N. N. Zinin, N. N. Beketov, D. I. Mendeleev, and A. M. Butlerov. The society published the journal Zhurnal RFKhO from 1876, combining the physics and chemistry sections. The sections were published separately from 1907. The society's activity was stopped in 1932, and was succeeded by The All-Union (today All-Russian) D. I. Mendeleev Chemical Society in Moscow, which had a branch in St. Petersburg. The Russian Physics and Chemistry Society's former library, at 7/9 Universitetskaya Embankment, currently houses the Russian Chemistry Society's library. The library numbers over 170,000 volumes.
