NOVO-KAMENNY BRIDGE (also known as Vodoprovodny; Yamskoy, after Yamskaya Sloboda; Bolshoy Karetny; Granitny), over Obvodny Canal, at Ligovsky Avenue. The bridge was built in 1817-21 (engineer P.P. Bazen) on the site of a wooden viaduct that existed here in 1805-11 (engineer F.I. Gerard). The opening of the bridge was covered with a very flat granite vault with wooden beds so as to let the water of Ligovsky Canal flow through. In 1846-1848, the bridge was rebuilt with stone (engineer A.N. Erakov); this was apparently the time when it acquired its present-day name. In the 1890s, the passage on the bridge was stopped up, footways brought to the cantilevers, and the granite basins on the banks were dismantled. The bridge also had a cast-iron grating and standard lamps with torches in the shape of dolphins (have not survived to the present day). In 1969-1979, it was rebuilt and extended (engineer A.D. Gutzeit, architect L.A. Noskov). The span was bridged over by a three-joint framework of reinforced concrete, the fronts and the piers were faced with granite. An underpass was laid behind the right-bank abutment. The bridge is 38.2 metres long (not including the length of the underpass), and 44.8 metres wide.
