STIEGLITZ CENTRAL TECHNICAL DRAWING SCHOOL (13-15 Solyanoy Lane), State Art School. It was founded in January 1876 (opened on 12.11.1879) together with the Primary School of Drawing, Drafting and Modeling through the funding of Baron A.L. Stieglitz (see the Stieglitz Family). The school existed on percents of the capital he left in 1884 (approximately 7 million roubles) and prepared artists in arts and crafts for the industry, as well as teachers in drawing and drafting for work in secondary art and technical schools. The school was called the Central (CTDS) after the establishment of its faculties in Narva, Saratov, and Yaroslavl in the1890s. Architect M.E. Messmacher was the first director of the school from 1879 to 1896. Two hundred people were studying at CTDS in 1892 in the faculties of general artistic education, majolica, decorative painting and carving, minting, xylography and watercolor, porcelain painting, flower painting, weaving and printing crafts. The teachers of CTDS include A.D. Kivshenko, M.K. Klodt, V.V. Mate, A.I. von Gogen, N.A. Koshelev; the graduates include G.M. Manizer, K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, A.A. Rylov, A.P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva. After October 1917, the school was transformed several times: in 1922, the school merged with Petrograd Higher Art and Technical Institute together with the adjoined museum (founded by Messmacher in 1895) and library and was closed in 1924. In 1943-45, the Art and Technical School (today the Art and Technical Academy) was created on the basis of CTDS. The main building of the school was built in 1878-81 (architects R.A. Gedike and A.I. Krakau), to which the 5th floor was added in 1886 (architect Messmacher). The neighbouring building of the museum was attached to it in 1885-96 in the Messmacher project (in 1945, The Arts and Crafts Museum). References: Тыжненко Т. Е. Максимилиан Месмахер. Л., 1984.
