MILITARY ORPHANS' HOUSE was a military boarding school for children (from four years age) of officers and soldiers, who were either impoverished or dead. It was founded in 1794 by the Grand Prince Pavel Petrovich (future Emperor Pavel I) in Gatchina as an orphans' house. In 1797, it was called the House of Military Education and was moved to St. Petersburg (to present-day 21 Krasnogo Kursanta Street). From 1798, the Imperial Military Orphans' House had departments for noble children (intended for 200 people, preparing non-commissioned officers with right to become an officer after one to three years of service) and soldiers' children (intended for 800 people, preparing handymen, clerks and non-commissioned officers). In 1829, it was transformed into the Pavlovsky Cadet Corps (see Cadet Corps).
