HOUSES OF SPECIALISTS. New buildings constructed after a decision taken by the city administration to transform Leningrad into the model socialist city. Houses of Specialists were constructed for workers from different branches of the economy, including city economy, science, and culture, and initially were designed in the Constructivist style. In 1929-1931, a residential centre was erected for the Union of Soviet Trade Workers at 55 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue (architects E.A. Levinson, A.M. Sokolov). In 1931-1935, an apartment house for the Leningrad Council was erected (13 Karpovka River Embankment; architects E.A. Levinson, I.I. Fomin). In the 1920s-30s, projects with greater capacities for mass-settlement of new residents called for larger buildings with a higher number of floors, and forced the development of municipal services for different city districts (architects G.A. Simonov, B.R. Rubanenko, T.D. Katzenelenbogen, M.E. Rusakov). In 1934-1937, a building of the same type was erected on the corner of Bolshaya Monetnaya Street and Leo Tolstoy Street (architects V.O. Munz, O.V. Suslova). At that very time, the House of Specialists at 61 Lesnoy Avenue was erected (architect G.A. Simonov), as was the Foreign Shock Worker House at 37 Kronverksky Avenue (architects V.O. Munz, L.E. Ass), The House of Art Workers at 14 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue, and a building at 4 Malaya Posadskaya Street for the cinema studio Leningrad Film (both by the architect D.G. Fomichev). The architectural ensemble at 69-71 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue included the House for Members of the Institute of Experimental Medicine, designed in the style of Neoclassicism (architects N.E. Lansere, A.F. Ryumin). In 1938, the House for the Technical Engineering Workers of the Svir Construction was completed at 84-86 Maly Avenue on the Petrogradskaya Side (architect I.G. Yavein), becoming one of the last buildings in Leningrad built in the Constructivist style. In the early 1950s, the House of Textiles at 79 Moskovsky Avenue was completed (it was started in 1938 according to designs by architect L.A. Ilyin). Houses of Specialists are marked by a bright individuality evident in the architectural choices, and contribute considerably to the city's appearance.
