EGYPTIAN BRIDGE, spanning the Fontanka River, on Lermontovsky Avenue. Built in 1825-26 (engineers V.A. Khristianovich, V.K. Traitteur). A single-span chain bridge with rich architectural mounting in Egyptian style; on the approaches are four cast iron sphinxes with torches on their heads (sculpture P.P. Sokolov). The bridge collapsed under a squadron of the Grenade Lifeguard Cavalry Regiment 20 January 1905. In its place opposite to Usachev Lane a temporary wooden bridge was built 1905 (demolished in 1956). The current bridge was built in 1954-56 (engineer V.V. Demchenko, architects P.A. Areshev, V.S. Vasilkovsky). The frame of the bridge consists of steel bevelled double articulate frames, with a curvilinear contour of the lower girdle girth rail. The foundations are faced with granite; the sphinxes have been restored. Length: 46.8 metres, width: 27 metres. D. Y. Guzevich.
