Lomonosova Bridge

LOMONOSOVA BRIDGE (until 1948 Chernyshev Bridge), over the Fontanka River, on Lomonosova Street (former Chernyshev Lane, hence its old name). It was built in 1785-87 following a standard design, as a three-span bridge: with the side spans arched by basket-shaped stone vaults, and a timber pivot middle span. The piers are topped by four pavilion-towers for hoisting the opening span. In 1912-13, the pivot deck was replaced with a metal girder (engineer А.P. Pshenitsky). Around 1915, granite obelisk lanterns were set on the abutments (architect I.А. Fomin). Length: 63 metres, width: 14.7 metres.
