ART CULTURE MUSEUM opened in 1921 in the former Myatlev family's house at 9 St.Isaac’s Square on the initiative of a group of left-wing artists. Unlike traditional museums exhibiting pieces of art on a national or historical basis, the Art Culture Museum was intended to demonstrate artistic culture itself, i.e. painting techniques, materials and processing methods adopted by various nations at various times. The collection of painting and graphic arts mainly represented the latest trends in Russian art, from impressionism to non-objective art. The layout was changed regularly but did not always meet the initial concept of the museum. At the head of the museum were N. I. Altman in 1921, A. I. Taran in 1921-23, and K. S. Malevich in 1923-26. Among the museum's members were N. N. Punin and artists V. E. Tatlin, M. V. Matyushin, A. E. Karev, and N. A. Tyrsa. Based on the museum, the Institute of Art Culture was established in 1923. The museum was closed in 1926, its funds handed over to the State Russian Museum.
