NEVSKY PLANT (51 Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue) open joint-stock company, an engineering plant, a leading supplier of equipment for gas pipelines, metallurgy, and chemical industry. Founded by mining engineers P. F. Semyannikov and V. A. Poletina in 1857, it belonged to the Russian Joint-Stock Company of Mechanical and Mining Plants from 1870 and was called Nevsky Shipbuilding and Mechanical Plant from 1898. It actually belonged to the state till 1912 with the State Bank as its major stockholder. Initially the plant had built warships such as battleships, cruisers, and torpedo boats, mixed vessels, towboats, and later - icebreakers. Building of steam locomotives became another direction in the work of the plant from the late 1860s. Its engineering office designed steam locomotives for freight and passenger trains, suburban trains, switching operations vehicles, etc. The plant was a member of Prodparavoz Syndicate from 1907. The metallurgical department supplied metals and pressed parts, including the large-sized parts, not only to the plant itself but also onto the market. Despite successful technical solutions, the plant had to suspend its work in 1884 and 1888 and was nearly closed down in 1908 but the industrial revival and the interest shown by the Russian-Asian Bank helped avoid closure. Bought from the State Bank, the plant joined the Military Industrial Concern in 1912 to supply its enterprises with metal and large pressed parts. Nationalized after the October 1917, the plant first operated as a shipyard. After the plan of the State Commission for Electrification of Russia known as the GOELRO plan had been adopted, the plant focused on power engineering producing boilers and turbines and industrial equipment such as compressors and blowers. While producing ammunition during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, the plant resumed manufacture of equipment to supply regions that were freed from the Nazis in 1944. Later the plant specialised in steam and gas turbines, gas compressors for trunk pipelines, blast-furnace equipment, and equipment for comprehensive turbine casting. The plant became a joint-stock company in 1994. The Installation Department that had specialised in field installation and setup of equipment and staff training evolved into Nevmashservis Company in 1991 as a separate public enterprise.
