BASIN HOUSE (5 Ostrovsky Square), architectural monument of the Neo-Byzantine style, apartment house of N.P. Basin (built by his plans in 1878-79). The house facades with windows of varied patterns and featuring so-called “polotentsa” (towels) carved, headers and corbels (“stolbiki-kubyshki”) were made, according to some researchers, based on drawings of architects I.P. Ropet and N.N. Nikonov. Its picturesque silhouette, rich decoration make Basin House stand out among the neighbouring buildings. At the same time, the house presents a text-book example of disregarding the setting of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, created in the epoch of Neoclassicism.
