Semenovsky Bridge

SEMENOVSKY BRIDGE, over the Fontanka River, along Gorokhovaya Street. The name refers to the neighbouring quarters of Semenovsky Life Guards Regiment. The plans of 1717 show a wooden bridge situated closer to present-day Gorstkin Bridge; in 1738, the bridge was already where it is today. In about 1788, Semenovsky Bridge was rebuilt to a standard design (see Belinskogo Bridge). In 1856-1857, its towers were dismantled, the piers relayed, and its spans were the first in St. Petersburg to be bridged with steel deck plate girders (engineer F.I. Enrold). In 1949, a new three-span continuous frame was built, and the piers were re-laid (engineer P.V. Bazhenov, architect L.A. Noskov). The length of the bridge on the alignment of the embankment is 54.7 metres, the width totals 19.5 metres.
