VESTNIK IZYASHCHNYKH ISKUSSTV (Fine Arts Reporter), journal of the fine arts. It was published on the initiative of the Academy of Arts in 1883-90 (in 1883 - four issues came out, from 1884 - the journal appeared with the regularity of six issues a year); the appendix Khudozhestvennye Novosti appeared twice a month under A. I. Somov's editorship. D. V. Aynalov, P. N. Petrov, N.P. Sobko, V. V. Stasov, V. V. Chuyko et al contributed for the journal. It published articles on the history of Russian and foreign art, on the issues of aesthetics and artistic techniques, essays about contemporary artists (V. G. Perov, V. V. Vereshchyagin, I. I. Shishkin, I. N. Kramskoy et al.), art exhibition critical reviews. The journal played a significant role in promotion of the realism in Russian painting, bridging the aesthetic gap between the Academy of Arts and Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions.
