Malakhit, Central Design Bureau

MALAKHIT (18 Frunze Street), St. Petersburg Bureau of Mechanical Engineering of the Russian Shipbuilding Agency and a leading Russian Design Bureau of nuclear-powered attack submarines and their weaponry. It was established in 1948 as Specialised Design Bureau No. 143, in 1966, it was reorganized into the All-Union Design and Assembly Bureau of Mechanical Engineering. In February 1974, it was merged with Volna Central Design Bureau. The Bureau was given its present name in 1991. Malakhit projects were used to build over 300 ships and vessels of the Russian navy and the civil fleet, including the first Russian atomic submarine. Malakhit is a leader in design of new types of submarine equipment, high-tensile hull plates, titanium alloys, and Russian deep-diving vehicles. At various times the Bureau used the services of naval architect V.N. Peregudov, academician N.N. Isanin, G.N. Chernyshev and other scholars.
