SEVERNAYA PCHELA (The Northern Bee), a political and literary newspaper, which appeared in 1825-64 and 1869-70. Until 1859 was under the editorship of its founder and publisher F. V. Bulgarin (in 1831-59 jointly with N. I. Grech), in the 1850s was effectively edited by P. S. Usov (becoming official editor from 1860). In 1825-30 the periodical appeared three times a week, from 1831 - daily. The largest privately owned newspaper; it enjoyed the special protection of the government, being granted the permission to publish political material. In 1825 the Severnaya Pchela published works of Alexander Pushkin, K. F. Ryleev, F. N. Glinka. After 14 December 1825 the paper took a conservative stand, in the 1820-30s was most popular within the middle class readership, foreshadowing the emerging of the yellow press in Russia. It was also the first to insert commercial advertisements in the Smes, Miscellany section. In 1836 actively supported the project of Russia's first railway running from St. Petersburg to Tsarskoe Selo and Pavlovsk. In order to capture the readers' attention it was permanently engaged in polemics with other publications, employing every conceivable means (down to personal assaults). In the early 1860s the position of the Severnaya Pchela grew less officious. Among others А. V. Druzhinin, А. I. Benni, Nikolay Leskov contributed to it. In 1864 the publication was terminated. In 1869-70 the Severnaya Pchela appeared for several months under A. V. Starchevsky's editorship. The editorial office was accommodated in the house of Grech (92 Moika River Embankment).
